Sun Protection for Littles
Kids and teens are particularly vulnerable to the effects of UV rays as their eyes are still growing. Sunburns in childhood can lead to a higher risk of developing skin cancer later in life. It can also increase the risk of serious eye diseases in adulthood.
Beyond the general risks of UV exposure, children using atropine eye drops as part of their myopia control plan are additionally susceptible to UV exposure, as these drops widen the pupils. Children on atropine treatment may also be more sensitive to light. We recommend a pair of quality sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect their eyes, face, and neck from the sun.
Important Considerations When Buying Sunglasses
Not all sunglasses are created equal. When purchasing a new pair of sunglasses, be sure to consider the following:
- UV protection rating: Look for sunglasses with 100% UV protection or UV 400 stickers
- Lens color: Brown, gray, and green lenses provide better protection than other colors. Yellow lenses provide less protection. A darker lens color does not automatically mean better protection; UV protection is most important.
- Lens size: Larger lenses can offer more sun protection compared to smaller glasses. Wraparound frames provide even better protection.
- Polarized lenses: These lenses are a great option for driving and participating in activities near areas of glare, like bodies of water or snow-covered regions. However, polarized lenses can make viewing digital screens more difficult. Additionally, not all polarized lenses provide UV protection. Look for both labels.
