Find Lasting Relief for Dry Eye

Dry eye is a chronic, uncomfortable condition that can cause daily irritation and distract you from work or other responsibilities.

At Cary Family Eye Care, we prioritize identifying and treating the underlying source of your discomfort rather than simply masking symptoms. A comprehensive dry eye assessment performed by one of our optometrists is the essential first step toward achieving lasting comfort.

For many patients, dryness is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a condition where the oil-producing glands in the eyelids become blocked. For these individuals, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy and radiofrequency (RF) treatments may offer an effective treatment path with results that can provide long-term relief from irritation.

Book your dry eye assessment today to determine if IPL or RF is right for you.

What Is OptiLIGHT IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy uses precise pulses of light to address the inflammation and vascular issues often associated with dry eye.

We use the OptiLIGHT device by Lumenis, which is a specialized technology specifically designed and FDA-approved for the management of dry eye disease. IPL is supported by clinical research, which demonstrates that IPL can significantly improve tear film stability and the function of the meibomian glands. By using specific wavelengths of light, OptiLIGHT helps restore the natural balance of your tear film.

How Does IPL Treat Dry Eye?

Many cases of dry eye are fueled by chronic inflammation (blepharitis), MGD, or an overgrowth of Demodex mites along the eyelid margins. OptiLIGHT IPL addresses these problems through several mechanisms:

  • Reducing inflammation: The light energy helps close off abnormal blood vessels that leak inflammatory markers into the eye tissues.
  • Improving oil flow: The gentle heat generated during the procedure helps liquefy oil blockages trapped within the meibomian glands, allowing them to flow more freely.
  • Controlling bacteria and mites: The pulses of light help reduce the presence of bacteria and Demodex mites that contribute to eyelid irritation.

In simple terms, IPL acts as a “reset” for your eyelids, calming the surface of the eye and helping your natural tear production return to a healthier state.

Is IPL Right for Me?

Determining if IPL is the correct path for you depends on the specific type of dry eye you are experiencing. Individuals with poor-quality tears due to an insufficient oil layer in their tear film, for example, may benefit from IPL, while those who don’t produce enough tears will likely need a different approach.

A detailed dry eye assessment is necessary to confirm if your symptoms stem from MGD or other inflammatory factors that could benefit from IPL treatment.

IPL may improve your dry eye symptoms and provide lasting relief if your condition stems from:

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
  • Chronic blepharitis or eyelid inflammation
  • Demodex mite infestations
  • Redness and irritation that do not respond to standard eye drops

IPL is generally not recommended for individuals with:

  • Aqueous deficiency dry eye (low water production rather than oil issues)
  • A history of keloid scarring
  • Current pregnancy

What Is OptiPLUS RF?

OptiPLUS RF is a non-invasive treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to deliver gentle heat to the skin around the eyes. Unlike some light-based therapies, this technology is safe for all skin types, making it a versatile option for a wide range of patients.

The procedure is efficient, typically lasting about 6 minutes per side. While individual experiences vary, most patients see noticeable and lasting results after completing a series of four sessions.

How Does RF Treat Dry Eye?

Radiofrequency treatment works by applying controlled energy to the delicate skin around the eyes, creating a gentle heating effect.

This process serves several clinical purposes: it stimulates natural collagen production, encourages blood circulation, and melts hardened oil blockages within the meibomian glands. By thinning these oils, the glands can flow more freely, which improves the quality of your tear film.

RF is particularly effective at addressing MGD and eyelid laxity—a condition where the lids do not close fully during a blink, leading to increased tear evaporation.

Am I a Good Candidate for RF?

Determining if radiofrequency is the right approach for you depends on the underlying cause of your symptoms. As RF treatment primarily treats MGD and skin laxity concerns, individuals with aqueous deficiency dry eye will likely need a different treatment method to target the root cause of their symptoms.

A detailed dry eye assessment and diagnosis by an optometrist is necessary to confirm if RF therapy is a good fit for your specific eye health needs.

Individuals who may find RF effective include those:

  • Diagnosed with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
  • Experiencing mild to moderate eyelid laxity that leads to incomplete blinking
  • Who have tried traditional dry eye treatments, such as drops or masks, without success

RF is generally not recommended for:

  • Individuals with aqueous deficiency dry eye (a lack of tear volume rather than oil quality)
  • Those with certain active skin infections or specific medical conditions
  • Individuals who are currently pregnant
