Improve Visual Function and Comfort with Vision Therapy
Most people are aware of common vision problems like nearsightedness and farsightedness. But did you know that there’s a lot more at play for comfortable, functional vision than whether your eyesight is blurry?
Functional vision refers to the ability to effectively use your vision to perform daily tasks and activities, such as reading, writing, driving, judging distances, playing sports, recognizing faces, and navigating unfamiliar environments. It involves well-coordinated communication between all parts of your visual system, from your eyes to your brain.
When there are problems with functional vision, you can experience discomfort such as headaches, nausea, difficulty reading or concentrating on near work, or poor depth perception. Our sister clinic, Cary Vision Therapy, offers functional vision assessments for kids and adults with suspected vision problems.

What Is a Functional Vision Assessment?
A functional vision assessment evaluates visual function beyond checking your prescription. While we check visual function during a comprehensive eye exam for both kids and adults, our functional vision assessments go further in-depth for those with suspected functional vision problems.
We will assess skills such as eye teaming (how well your eyes work together), eye tracking (how well your eyes follow a moving object or track along a page), and eye focusing (how easily your eyes focus and refocus at various distances) to determine if your vision is performing adequately for your daily life. We’ll also complete a sensorimotor exam.
These exams are performed by Dr. Logan Lineberry, our Developmental Optometrist.
Symptoms that May Indicate a Functional Vision Problem
Not all vision problems cause blurry vision. Many other symptoms could be related to functional vision issues that require vision therapy, rather than a new glasses prescription, to solve.
Some symptoms that could indicate a vision problem include:
- Double vision
- Headaches that occur during or after near work activities (such as reading, writing, using a computer or smartphone, etc.)
- Feeling dizzy or nauseated by near work
- Falls asleep while reading
- Burning, itchy, watery eyes
- Sees worse at the end of the day
- Poor reading comprehension
- Head tilt or closing one eye to read
- Poor/inconsistent in sports
- Clumsy, knocks things over
- Car or motion sickness
For a complete list of symptoms, check out our symptom survey on the Cary Vision Therapy website.
